Glowworms in Nadavir
Where did the idea for glowworms lighting up the tunnels and caves of Nadavir come from? I wanted to create a world that was different from other books about dwarves. Fire torches lining the passageways would have fit the fantasy vibe of the story. They also would have made Nadavir cloudy with smoke. But why not give the insects a job? So glowworms are important to the story, and I developed specific tools that the dwarves use to tickle the glowworms brighter or dim their glow. There's even a character named Glimmer whose glow reflects his mood. Can't wait to hear what readers think of my glowworm idea!

Middle Grade Dragon Books
I’ve always wanted to write a book about dragons. I know, I
know, they’re huge, breath fire, and are famous for their bad tempers, but they
are also majestic and magical. I have some ideas for dragon books, and although
I haven’t planned any dragons for Nadavir, you just never know what might pop
up in a rough draft!
If you have a child in your life between the ages of 8 and
12 (middle grade), you might want to give them one of these excellent books about
dragons that have entertained and inspired me:
DEALING WITH DRAGONS, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Book 1 (4
books in series) by Patricia Wrede
“Princess
Cimorene is quite sure that there’s more to the world than curtseying and
courting.
And what she finds in her chosen career as a dragon’s
princess is sometimes more than she can handle.”
THE DRAGONET PROPHECY, Wings of Fire #1 (13 books in series so far) by Tui T. Sutherland
“Five dragonets are collected to
fulfill a prophecy, raised in a hidden cave and enlisted, against their will,
to end the terrible war. But not every dragonet wants a destiny. And when the
select five escape their underground captors to look for their original homes,
what has been unleasHed on the dragon world may be far more than the
revolutionary planners intended…”
This is a prequel to Dragon’s
Milk (see below) which came out first. You can start the series with either of these
books. I started my journey with Dragon’s Milk.
In Flight of the Dragon Kyn,
“Since Kara can call birds, the king sends for her to call, not birds, but
dragons, because he has sworn to eradicate them…Escaping to the mountains, she
stumbles on the dragons’ lair…”
DRAGON’S MILK by Susan Fletcher“Kaeldra must search out the mother dragon whose draclings have just hatched and somehow get some of her precious milk. It’s the only way to save her foster-sister’s life…she’s the only one who can do it. For she is the only one who can actually communicate with dragons.”
