Norse Mythology for Kids Book

When I posted in my newsletter about my efforts to clean out my bookshelves and donate books that we were no longer planning to read, some people asked me about the books I was keeping. Today I'm sharing one of those books, Norse Mythology for Kids: Tales of Gods, Creatures, and Quests by Mathias Nordvig, PHD. This beautiful volume, filled with exciting adventures from Scandinavian culture and illustrated with rich color illustrations by Meel Tamphanon, is published by Rockridge Press and contains a glossary to explain unfamiliar words to young readers. You'll also find an index, references, and a list of books for further reading. It's a great introduction to help kids learn about the myths that inspired early Vikings.

My novel Frigg's Journey to Anasgar owes its roots to Norse Mythology and this is just one of the books that inspired me.

Columbia River Author Festival

I'm really looking forward to sharing Frigg's Journey to Anasgar with the kids at the Columbia River Author Festival on May 6th at the Longview WA Public Library! You can meet and chat with more than 50 authors about their books. I'll be reading at 10:30 AM on the children's stage and will be selling books until 4 PM. It should be an enjoyable day for all. Hope to see you there!

Poet Tree

When I was the librarian of a school that focused on immersing students in both arts and academics, I brought a small tree into the library each April and adorned it with rolled-up scrolls. Students were invited to select a scroll, and their delightful smiles warmed my heart as they unrolled and read the poem printed inside.

I also provided blank scrolls and ribbons, inviting students to write their own poems and add them to the tree for other students to enjoy. It was an activity that students and staff looked forward to each year. It is my sincere hope that it provided a fond memory for those students and that helped them appreciate and seek out thoughtful poetry.
Why not find a bit of greenery in your yard to bring inside and place in a vase? You can write your favorite poems on slips of paper, roll them into scrolls, and decorate your Poet Tree!

Spine or Stack Poem

Here’s a fun poetry activity for kids. Have them spread out their books and look for commonalities in the titles that they can put together to form a Spine Poem.  These are sometimes called Stack Poems, depending on whether you put them side by side on the shelf to be read left or right or in a stack to be read top to bottom.

The Goose Girl, sliding on the edge through the lock.
The search for Wondla.
The sign of the dove for Mike.
Time for bears to dance.
An island like you withering by the sea.
Feed the little white horse.
I am the cheese.
Niagara Falls, or does it?

Time stops for no mouse.
Out of the dust, the giver, gathering blue gifts.
The dark hills divide a crooked kind of perfect.
Call me hope.

While they’ve got their books out of the shelves, why not have them dust and organize the bookshelves!

Poetry Fun!

This month's activity in the Nadavir Kids Club gives you an example of a Blackout Poem using words from Frigg's Journey to Anasgar. You'll find step-by-step directions for writing your own Blackout Poetry! It's a fun style of poetry that everyone can write! Have fun with it, and let me know if you'd like to have more poetry activities in the clubhouse.

You can join the Nadavir Kids Club FREE at my website HERE. A new activity is added to the clubhouse each month!

Frigg's Blackout Poetry

This a fun idea for you and your kids! Why not create Blackout Poetry? Take a piece of writing. Highlight words and phrases that bring together a cohesive poem. Blackout the rest with a dark marker. Happy National Poetry Month!

It's National Poetry Month!

 It's National Poetry Month!

"The 2023 poster was designed by Marc Brown, creator of the popular Arthur book and PBS television series. The artwork incorporates an excerpted line from the poem 'Carrying' by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón. Brown was selected by Scholastic—the global children’s publishing, education, and media company—to create the artwork for this year’s poster as part of a new National Poetry Month initiative between the publisher and the Academy of American Poets."

Happy St Patrick's Day!

The Nadavir Gang wish you a very Irish St. Patrick's Day!
