Norse Mythology for Kids! Meet Thor

Norse Mythology for Kids! Meet Thor

Thor isn’t just “the hammer guy”—he’s the protector type in many stories.

• Symbol: Mjölnir (his hammer)
• Vibe: big energy, big heart, sometimes a big temper
• Myth tip: Thor’s stories often feel like action-adventures (perfect for 8–12)

Did you know that the word “Thunder” comes from the same ancient word as Thor, the thunder god? Long ago, people believed thunder was the sound of Thor swinging his mighty hammer across the sky.

Summer Norse Mythology activities:

1. Research the origin of the word “Thursday.” Can your child guess where it came from?

2. Make Your Own Mini Mjölnir - Kids cut out a cardboard hammer and wrap it in aluminum foil, add runes with marker, and choose a “power” (kindness, bravery, helping others). Bonus: Have them “charge” it by tapping it on the ground and shouting their power.

3. Thunder Relay Race - Kids run a short course carrying a “hammer” baton. Each station represents a Norse challenge:
  • Cross the rainbow bridge (a taped line)
  • Dodge frost giants (cones)
  • Call the thunder (a big stomp)
4. - Try a fun writing prompt: “If Thor showed up at your school for a day, what do you think he’d do first?”

Parents/teachers: Do your kids like heroes who are serious, silly, or a mix of the two?
